The Struggle by L.J. Smith

Title: The Struggle
Author: L.J. Smith
Series: The Vampire Diaries
Published: 1991
Summary: Elena and Stefan are in an established relationship. Damon, Stefan’s brother, wants Elena all for himself and soon the brothers are fighting over her like they fought over Katherine years before.
Note: I read this book in the version that compiles both The Awakening and The Struggle, which was published in 2007; because of that, my reviews for The Awakening and The Struggle will have the same cover.

This book was a struggle for me to get through. (I can’t decide if that pun is intended). I felt it was slow going and just couldn’t get into it as much as I found myself getting into The Awakening.

I’ve also decided that I really can appreciate all of the changes that went into creating how the television show does its canon; especially when it comes to the characterization of Damon Salvatore. He is such a repulsive, abusive character in the books and his television counterpart (portrayed by the lovely Ian Somerhalder) is almost a saint by comparison. Also, I’m assuming things just get worse from here based on the little preview of book three offered at the end of this book set.

Passing Strange by Daniel Waters

Title: Passing Strange
Author: Daniel Waters
Series: Generation Dead
Published: 2010
Summary: The Differently Biotic are being blamed for crimes across the nation and Karen DeSonne (the only suicide [so far] to come back) has decided that she is going to investigate what is going on and clear the names of her friends. Pete Martinsburg is still against zombies and has come back to Oakvale on the instructions of The Reverend from One Life Ministries.

I really like these zombie books because I’m really hoping it will finally be revealed to the readers why certain kids come back and others do not; also, I want to know why it’s just teenagers that are coming back. I like the idea that it’s the concept of love that brings people back and keeps them on the Earth. This, so far, is possibly my favourite book of the series because I really like Karen. I think her issues were dealt with really respectfully and I want to read more of her story.

Eclipse by Cate Tiernan

Title: Eclipse
Author: Cate Tiernan
Series: Sweep
Published: 2002
Summary: Ciaran has put a black wave on Morgan, her loved ones and Kithic. Daniel has found a way to create a spell that he thinks will stop it.
Note: This was book 45 for 50 Book Challenge 2010, but my review did not get posted until 2011.

It had been a long time since I’d been taken back into the world of the Sweep series. At first, I wasn’t even sure this was the book in the series I needed next because it had been so long. As with the other books, this one was a quick read and just light and fluffy (despite being about Ciaran bringing about a Dark Wave on Morgan, her family/loved ones, and Kithic).

There is just something about these books that makes me not feel like they are anything but mind candy and I think I enjoy it that way. (It keeps me from raging about all the sensationalism used in the series regarding Wicca, witchcraft, and Paganism.)

Also, I was glad that this was the book where Alisa got off her high horse and started actually thinking about stuff going on instead of continuing to blame Morgan for it. That got really annoying, quite fast.

I hope my library has the next book; I’m so close to finishing this series and I just want to be done with it!
