Title: The Struggle
Author: L.J. Smith
Series: The Vampire Diaries
Summary: Elena and Stefan are in an established relationship. Damon, Stefan’s brother, wants Elena all for himself and soon the brothers are fighting over her like they fought over Katherine years before.
Note: I read this book in the version that compiles both The Awakening and The Struggle, which was published in 2007; because of that, my reviews for The Awakening and The Struggle will have the same cover.
This book was a struggle for me to get through. (I can’t decide if that pun is intended). I felt it was slow going and just couldn’t get into it as much as I found myself getting into The Awakening.
I’ve also decided that I really can appreciate all of the changes that went into creating how the television show does its canon; especially when it comes to the characterization of Damon Salvatore. He is such a repulsive, abusive character in the books and his television counterpart (portrayed by the lovely Ian Somerhalder) is almost a saint by comparison. Also, I’m assuming things just get worse from here based on the little preview of book three offered at the end of this book set.
